D9LOVE Stories…Maurice and Chanel Lee

Name of couple: Maurice & Chanel Lee

Organization (His & Hers): Omega Psi Phi & Delta Sigma Theta

How many years married? 5 months

How did you meet? My sorority sisters wanted to hang out with the Omegas after one of our sorority events. Since it had been forever since we had hung out, I was excited to see what the night had in store! We all decided to meet up at Brothers, a bar in the Arena District. Upon arrival, I saw a group of Omegas, all of whom I assumed were married. While having a conversation with one of my sorority sisters, we started talking about Cleveland. Moe, listening in on the conversation, overheard me enthusiastically talking about my hometown and interjected with “what part?” I replied, “93rd,” to which he asked “what street.” I said “Orleans.” He then said, “Oh we are really “family” now, I grew up on 93rd and Heath”. We started traveling down memory lane, recalling street names, corner stores and high schools, laughing, joking, and having a great time thinking about our childhoods. After some time at the bar, the Omegas suggested going to another bar. As we were leaving, I asked my sorority sisters if they wanted to go to the next spot, especially since all the Omegas were married. We decided to still go!

After being there for some time, Moe asked me to dance. I told him I would dance with him if he wasn’t married! Moe emphatically proclaimed “I’m not married! Who told you that?” I told him it didn’t matter, and we proceeded to dance the night away. After leaving the bar, we talked on the phone for hours!

As the months progressed, we start finding out that our families already knew each other from the neighborhood, that we played together as kids, that we sat on my best friend’s porch together as teenagers, and that we had the same circle of friends from The Ohio State University, but did not remember each other. Through the Grace of God, our lives crossed at the perfect time.

How did he propose? Maurice “Moe” Lee is everything I envisioned, everything I prayed about, everything I would hope my husband would be! Our lives changed when he got on one knee on the 26th of March and asked to be my husband! The day before my birthday at dinner.

What do you love or value most about your mate? I love that Moe is different from the rest, he confessed his love early on, he’s passionate, loving, and the way he cares for me.

When looking for a mate, was their involvement in a fraternity/sorority a requirement?  If so, why?

I would not say either of us preferred a mate that is “Greek”, but it makes attending “Greek” functions more comfortable than when you date someone that is not “Greek” and they feel out of place.

Have you found that being married to someone in a fraternity/sorority has added to your relationship?  If so, how? I think it adds more when it comes to Greek functions, Founder’s Day celebration, etc. but it does not add more value to our relationship.

Did you include any rituals from your respective fraternity/sorority in your wedding ceremony or reception?  If so, please explain. Yes, when we got married we both sang our respective songs.

Have you continued to be active in your fraternity/sorority since you’ve been married?  If so, please explain. Moe is still very active in his organization, I had to cool off a little because we are currently expecting. I have had a rough time with this pregnancy but once we have the baby, I will be more active!

What are the positives to both of you being members of the Divine Nine?Being able to enjoy each other’s Founder’s Day, the day we crossed, Greek functions, etc., and having something additional in common.
